Himalayan Catastrophe: Beijing Deploys Major Resources in Strategic Tibet

Beijing is deploying an exceptional array of technological and military assets in Tibet following a recent catastrophe, signaling the region's paramount strategic importance. The county of Jilong, a critical hub for Sino-Nepalese trade and a repository of lithium and rare metals, is at the center of these efforts. These resources are seen as crucial leverage for China in its dealings with the United States.

The deployment underscores China's focus on Tibet not just for its economic potential but also for its geopolitical significance. Tibet controls the water resources of seven Asian countries. The planned Yarlung Tsangpo dam, which is set to become the world's largest, has already raised concerns in New Delhi regarding access to the Brahmaputra River.

This focus aligns with Xi's 2014 doctrine: "To govern the country well, we must govern our borders well, and to govern our borders well, we must first ensure stability in Tibet." This doctrine was reinforced after the 2008 Lhasa protests and reiterated in a 2025 white paper as a matter of "national sovereignty."

Economically, Jilong is more than just a remote Tibetan village; it is a vital corridor for trade between Nepal and Tibet, handling 30% of the total commerce between the two countries. A significant portion of Chinese electric vehicles destined for the Nepalese market passes through Jilong. However, the recent natural disaster may suspend the planned Himalayan railway project connecting Jilong and Kathmandu, according to the South China Morning Post.
