Hired assault for 80 million won: Nephew and accomplices arrested

Authorities have arrested seven people, including a 30-year-old suspect accused of orchestrating a violent assault on a colleague by hiring a group to carry out the attack. The alleged mastermind, identified as 'A', is accused of instructing a younger acquaintance to find individuals willing to inflict serious harm on their 60-year-old female colleague, referred to as 'B'.

'A' reportedly promised 80 million won (approximately $72,000 USD) for the assault, having already paid 10 million won upfront. Messages found on 'A's' messenger indicate instructions such as "2-3 months," "hospitalization level," and "it's okay to hit other places while hitting the face." Two assailants approached 'B' as she was returning home, with one acting as a lookout while the other physically attacked her, causing injuries requiring two weeks of medical treatment.

Police apprehended the assault perpetrators by analyzing their mobile phones, subsequently tracing them back to 'A'. It was also revealed that some of the arrested individuals attempted to conceal the identity of the mastermind by providing false statements, even offering an additional 10 million won to do so. The investigation suggests a network involving the initial instigator, a connector, and the hired attackers.

This incident is part of a larger pattern of "revenge-for-hire" crimes that South Korean police have been investigating. Since August of the previous year, authorities have documented 87 such cases nationwide. Previous incidents involved crimes like smearing feces and pasting defamatory flyers, or spraying food waste and vandalizing doors with graffiti, often facilitated through anonymous online channels. However, this particular case involved a more personal network of acquaintances and associates.
