Historic cemetery in Argentina turns 120, launches renovation plan

The historic Olivos Cemetery in Vicente López, Argentina, is set to mark its 120th anniversary on July 29 with a comprehensive renovation plan aimed at preserving its rich heritage. The cemetery holds the graves, vaults, sculptures, and buildings that chronicle the history of the region and honor figures from Argentine politics, science, and culture.

Despite its historical significance, the cemetery shows visible signs of deterioration in various sections due to time and inconsistent maintenance. To address this, the municipal administration is preparing a new integral plan for its restoration and enhancement. The initial phase will focus on the historic sector, aiming to restore its infrastructure while safeguarding its unique identity and heritage.

Javier Varani, secretary of the Association of Founders and Pioneers of Vicente López, expressed concern over the cemetery's "profound deterioration" regarding tombs and vaults, noting that the situation requires urgent reversal. The condition of the cemetery varies significantly by sector. Some tombs and underground niches exhibit signs of humidity, broken drawers, and poor lighting, while exterior areas feature damaged doors and overgrown vegetation on some graves.

In contrast, common areas such as internal paths, entrances, and green spaces are generally well-maintained. Municipal officials highlighted recent infrastructure interventions, including waterproofing galleries and updating lighting. The new plan promises further improvements to conservation conditions and daily use of the cemetery, ensuring its historical value is protected for future generations.
