HKFP Lens: Saying goodbye to Hong Kong’s modernist General Post Office after 50 years

Hong Kong’s modernist General Post Office is being farewelled after 50 years in Central.

Its construction had once prompted a different farewell. Conservationists mourned the loss of the earlier General Post Office, an Edwardian landmark celebrated for its sweeping archways, granite veranda pillars and distinctive façade of rose-coloured Amoy brick.

That old building represented a high standard of durability and architectural character, setting the backdrop for the departure of the modernist structure that followed it.
