Ho Chi Minh City intensifies market inspections, fines vendors for illegal poultry slaughter

Ho Chi Minh City authorities are cracking down on illegal poultry slaughtering, issuing significant fines to street vendors operating in unauthorized areas. Recent inspections across several markets have uncovered widespread violations of food safety regulations.

In one operation on May 27, the animal husbandry and veterinary station in District 5, in coordination with Thoi Hoa Ward authorities, fined five individuals a total of 35 million Vietnamese dong for slaughtering chickens and ducks at unapproved sites. Similar actions were taken the previous day at My Phuoc 3 Market, where six vendors were fined 42 million Vietnamese dong for the same offense.

One notable case involved Nguyen Van Quang, who was found to be illegally slaughtering 300 chickens in Tan Hiep neighborhood, Tan Dong Hiep Ward. He was fined 10.5 million Vietnamese dong and ordered to cease operations. Authorities also confiscated his business permits and licenses.

Tran Phu Cuong, head of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, stated that inspections will continue to focus on hygiene and food safety in slaughtering areas. The department will also monitor disease prevention, particularly African Swine Fever, and verify the origin of animal products, transportation, and storage conditions. Surprise inspections, including those conducted at night and in the early morning, are planned to further enforce regulations and eliminate illegal slaughtering practices.
