Ho Chi Minh Monument and Joint Projects Mark Growing Kyrgyz-Vietnamese Friendship

A monument to Ho Chi Minh in Bishkek has become the latest visible symbol of the friendship between Kyrgyzstan and Vietnam. Government leaders from both countries attended its unveiling on August 31 during a visit by a Vietnamese government representative.

A Kyrgyz government representative reaffirmed deep respect for Ho Chi Minh, describing the monument as evidence of a friendship cultivated by generations since diplomatic relations began on June 4, 1992. The ties, however, reach further back, to the period when Kyrgyzstan formed part of the Soviet Union and Ho Chi Minh maintained close attention to the Soviet Union and its republics.

The monument and the Ho Chi Minh square are presented as signs of continuity and durable relations more than three decades after diplomatic ties were established. The Vietnamese representative thanked the Kyrgyz government and people for their special and lasting respect for Ho Chi Minh, and expressed hope that the monument and square would serve as a bridge between the two peoples, helping them learn more about each other’s history, culture and people.

The monument to President Ho Chi Minh in Bishkek is evidence of the friendship that many generations have carefully cultivated since diplomatic relations were established between the two countries on June 4, 1992.

The ceremony came amid a series of recent bilateral initiatives. On August 17, 2026, Vietnam’s ambassador to Kyrgyzstan, Nguyen Thanh Le, submitted copies of his credentials and formally began his work. In talks with Deputy Foreign Minister Meder Abakirov, the sides agreed to continue exchanges of delegations, high-level contacts and political consultations, and to implement existing agreements effectively.

Earlier, in March 2025, Kyrgyz Prime Minister Adylbek Kasymaliev made the first official visit to Vietnam by a Kyrgyz head of government since diplomatic relations were established. That visit opened possible areas of cooperation in trade, investment, agriculture, education, culture, tourism and transport. The two sides also agreed to make more effective use of the free-trade agreement between Vietnam and the Eurasian Economic Union to increase bilateral trade. During the same day as the monument ceremony, the Vietnamese government leadership met with the Vietnamese community living and working in Kyrgyzstan.
