Hollywood Star Rosamund Pike Visits Sri Lanka to Mark Landmine Clearance Milestone

Award-winning Hollywood actress Rosamund Pike has arrived in Sri Lanka for a special visit aimed at commemorating a significant humanitarian milestone: the clearance of one million landmines. The British High Commission announced her arrival, highlighting her role as an ambassador for the MAG charity, an organization dedicated to clearing landmines and other explosive remnants of war.

Pike's visit underscores Sri Lanka's remarkable progress in demining over the past 17 years. The country has successfully removed one million landmines, a testament to the dedication of local deminers and international partners. During her trip, Pike will engage directly with the demining process, visiting areas in the Mannar and Mullaitivu districts that still require clearance.

Sri Lanka has made significant progress on its journey to becoming a mine-free country. We must commend the head of the Sri Lankan government, the deminers in the country, and the international partners for this effort.

Her itinerary includes meeting with both Sinhalese and Tamil communities affected by landmines and participating in an awareness program for schoolchildren on the dangers of unexploded ordnance. Pike is also scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya and other officials, further emphasizing the importance of the demining efforts.

British High Commissioner Andrew Patrick praised Sri Lanka's achievements, noting a dramatic reduction in landmine-related accidents, from 250 in 2024 to just three. He commended the Sri Lankan government, deminers, and international collaborators for their commitment. MAG has supported Sri Lanka's demining operations since 2002, with a local staff of 439 personnel contributing to this vital work.
