Honda's new scooter breaks design mold, eyes younger riders

Sundiro Honda is set to launch a new scooter in China, identified by the code SDH125T-50, which signals a significant shift in the brand's design philosophy for its popular scooter segment. Moving away from its traditionally soft and neutral styling, this new model embraces a youthful and sporty appearance, characterized by sharp, angular bodywork.

The front of the scooter is particularly striking, featuring a central projector headlight flanked by surrounding LED daytime running lights, creating a modern and assertive look. This design direction appears to be Honda's effort to refresh its image and appeal to a younger demographic, with some observers noting a resemblance to Yamaha's Augur or even the futuristic YZF-R9 sportbike.

Despite its aggressive styling, the SDH125T-50 is intended as a practical urban commuter. It measures 1,820 x 685 x 1,155 mm with a wheelbase of 1,246mm, making it suitable for navigating congested city streets and easy to park. Weighing 106kg, it is lighter than many competitors, enhancing maneuverability for daily use, especially for new riders or women.

The scooter is powered by a 124cc single-cylinder, air-cooled engine producing approximately 9.5 horsepower, with a registered top speed of 90 km/h. These specifications are deemed adequate for urban commuting, prioritizing durability and fuel efficiency. Notably, the anti-lock braking system (ABS) will be offered as an option, reflecting a growing trend of incorporating safety features into more affordable segments.

While the official name and price remain undisclosed, the SDH125T-50 is expected to be competitively priced to attract a broad audience, particularly young consumers. Its emergence highlights the intensifying competition in the motorcycle market, where manufacturers are increasingly focusing on design and features alongside price to capture market share.
