Honduran government dedicates L.62 million for municipalities under Yellow Alert due to drought

The Honduran government is implementing a comprehensive plan to address the severe impact of drought on 75 municipalities, allocating an estimated 62 million lempiras. The initiative, spearheaded by President Nasry Asfura, focuses on assisting communities identified as most vulnerable to the effects of the El Niño phenomenon.

Nelson Márquez, vice minister of the Secretariat for Risk Management and Contingencies (Copeco), detailed the strategy, emphasizing that 38 of the affected municipalities are at high risk of facing food security challenges and will receive priority attention. Aid distribution has already commenced in the southern regions, with teams deploying to other affected areas.

The funding for this emergency response is being managed by the Secretariat of Social Development (Sedesol). Márquez assured that the total financial commitment increases when resources from United Nations agencies and other international cooperation bodies are included.

The assistance aims to provide an integrated response, addressing not only food shortages but also critical needs such as access to potable water, water for irrigation, and health services. This multi-faceted approach involves the collaboration of various state institutions to ensure comprehensive support for the families impacted by the prolonged drought.
