Hong Kong authorities clear 20-year-old community space on Mission Hill

Hong Kong authorities commenced clearance operations on August 12, 2026, at Mission Hill in Sham Shui Po, targeting a community space on government land that had been occupied by residents for over two decades. Government contractors removed exercise equipment and benches from the site, known locally as Woh Chai Shan.

The Home Affairs Department announced a two-phase clearance operation, stating it would improve safety standards and offer residents enhanced recreational facilities. The department described the illegal occupation of the land as a "stubborn and long-standing" issue in the district for over ten years.

Residents had previously expressed concerns about losing their recreational space. The government's "optimization scheme" aims to "enhance the recreational and sports facilities on Woh Chai Shan while rectifying locations with hidden safety hazards." Upon completion, the area is expected to offer table tennis and fitness activities in a safer, more comfortable environment.

The clearance operations are scheduled to conclude between late August and September. Following the removal of existing structures, authorities will reinstate signage, install new seating, repair pathways, and add table tennis facilities.
