Hong Kong launches trial booking system for Sai Kung geopark trail to curb overtourism

Hong Kong authorities have introduced a booking system for the Po Pin Chau section of the High Island Geo Trail, a popular spot within the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark. This initiative aims to tackle overtourism and safeguard the natural environment from the impacts of excessive visitor numbers.

Starting next month and running until October 7, visitors will need to register online via the Klook platform for weekend visits to Po Pin Chau. A quota of 500 people will be allowed for each two-hour time slot. This measure is specifically targeting peak travel seasons, including the Mid-Autumn Festival and mainland China's National Day Golden Week holiday, periods that typically see a surge in visitors.

Authorities first said in June that they were exploring the introduction of a real-name reservation system to improve visitor flow management at Po Pin Chau.

The booking system, managed by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD), requires real-name registration to prevent scalping and no-shows. Successful registrants will receive an e-voucher with a QR code for entry. While this system applies to Po Pin Chau, it does not cover the East Dam and Biu Tsim Kok sections. Registration is not required for weekdays or for visits outside of the designated peak periods.

Sai Kung's scenic trails and beaches have been struggling with overcrowding, particularly during holidays. Public transport has faced challenges meeting the demand, and environmental groups have raised concerns about ecological damage. Authorities previously managed crowds by limiting entry when capacity was reached, but this trial booking system is seen as a more structured approach to promoting eco-tourism.
