Hope remains for the survival of Venezuelan artist Onai Quiñonez, following initial reports of his death after a devastating earthquake. His family has since clarified that the search for him is ongoing, and they are clinging to the possibility that he is still alive.

Quiñonez, an emerging voice in contemporary Venezuelan painting, was reported missing after the earthquake that struck Venezuela, causing widespread devastation and casualties. An initial announcement of his passing, made by individuals close to the family, was later retracted as new information emerged.

Those close to the artist stated they received updated information that has renewed their hope. "Understanding that even first-hand information can be mistaken, we will refrain from communicating further, but we will continue to send our best wishes for the prompt rescue of our dear Onai," they communicated.

The search for Quiñonez began days after the earthquake. He is recognized in Venezuelan arts for his exploration of matter, memory, and the relationship between the body and painting. His work has earned him accolades, including a special mention at the Luis Ángel Duque Prize and significant recognition for his piece "Res y todas las carnes (2024)" at the 24th Salón Jóvenes con FIA.
