Hopeful for Future, Moana Pasifika Coach Awaits Decisions

Despite facing an uncertain future, Moana Pasifika's head coach Tana Umaga remains hopeful that the team will continue to compete in Super Rugby Pacific beyond 2027. Speaking after a recent match, Umaga acknowledged that while there is some clarity, significant questions remain about the team's path forward.

"We always stay hopeful," Umaga stated, drawing a parallel to his own unexpected job prospects after giving up hope. "So, if it can happen to me it can happen to anyone."

Reports indicate that at least two organizations have expressed interest in securing the team's license following an announcement that the club would be disbanded. Among these potential buyers is the Kanaloa Consortium, a group based in Hawaii and Auckland. This consortium boasts backing from several prominent former All Blacks players of Pasifika heritage, including Joe Rokocoko, Ben Atiga, John Afoa, Anthony Tuitavake, and Jerome Kaino.

Tracy Atiga, CEO of Kanaloa, confirmed that their proposal has been submitted to New Zealand Rugby as required. New Zealand Rugby has remained tight-lipped about the specific bidders but has opened the process to all interested parties. Updates on the bidding process and an expected announcement regarding Moana Pasifika's future are pending.
