Horse breeding: The stallion parade showcases equestrian excellence with plenty of horsepower

Moritzburg’s stallion parades are again bringing horse fans together to see what Saxony and Thuringia’s breeding programs can do. The events, held for more than a century, present the region’s horses in a high-profile display of breeding and training.

Saxony’s Environment and Agriculture Minister Georg-Ludwig von Breitenbuch described the Saxon State Stud Administration as more than a historic institution. He called it a living center of expertise for horse breeding, the preservation of breeds and vocational training.

The administration currently has more than 80 breeding stallions and several covering stations in Saxony and Thuringia. Its active European Union insemination station serves breeders across Europe, which the minister said contributes to the competitiveness of horse breeding in both states. The administration is also one of the largest training providers for the horse management profession.

The state has invested in the site despite difficult budget conditions. A modern riding arena opened in August 2025 after an investment of around €27 million. The 4,200-square-meter facility can accommodate 824 visitors and is used for performance tests, courses and events. Administrative offices at the Moritzburg state stud are currently being renovated, and the ministry said the stud administration would remain a clear priority.

The administration also oversees conservation breeding for vulnerable horse breeds. Its program currently includes 25 stallions of the Saxon-Thuringian Heavy Warmblood and eight stallions of the Rhenish-German Coldblood. At the start of the new training year, 13 young people began training as horse managers, bringing the total number of trainees to 36 in horse care and service, as well as classical riding instruction. Further stallion parades are scheduled for September 13 and 19.
