Horvath hitting highs for streaking B.C. Lions

Zander Horvath is making waves for the B.C. Lions, with his impressive performances fueling the team's current three-game winning streak. Over this stretch, the 27-year-old American running back has accumulated 355 rushing yards at an average of 7.4 yards per carry and scored six touchdowns, five on the ground and one receiving.

It’s been a lot better than what it has been. But, I mean, it’s not just a one-man show. It’s everyone doing their job up front, receivers carrying out the fakes, quarterbacks carrying out the fakes. It’s everyone doing their 1/12 on the field, not just me.

Horvath, now in his second CFL season, has already surpassed his 2025 stats of 231 rushing yards and two touchdowns. He attributes his improved performance to increased opportunities and touches, noting that he now receives 10 to 15 carries in some games, compared to only a few earlier in the season. "It's been a lot better than what it has been," Horvath said. "But, I mean, it’s not just a one-man show. It’s everyone doing their job up front... It’s everyone doing their 1/12 on the field, not just me."

I think it’s more just the play count going up and more touches. Because at the beginning of the season, I was only getting maybe a few here and there, but now it’s 10 to 15 some games. It all just depends. But I’m just trying to capitalize whenever I get the opportunity.

Lions head coach Buck Pierce has observed Horvath's growing confidence and understanding of the team's systems. "Just like anything, the more reps you get, the more comfort you’re going to have," Pierce stated. "I think when you look at Zander, he works extremely hard." Pierce highlighted Horvath's ability to gain tough yards while also having the speed to break away for long gains, crediting his diligent preparation. "He’s a good football player that has a great combination of strength and speed."

Horvath's skills have not gone unnoticed by opponents. Saskatchewan Roughriders head coach Corey Mace acknowledged Horvath's impact, expressing respect for his abilities ahead of their upcoming game. Selected by the Los Angeles Chargers in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL draft, Horvath brings NFL experience to the Lions, having played 15 regular-season games for the Chargers.
