Hosts Cut Vacations Short for Special Broadcast on Gironde Wildfires

French radio hosts Julien Courbet and Éric Jean-Jean have cut short their vacations to return to RTL for a special broadcast addressing the devastating wildfires currently raging in Gironde, France. The program, airing on Wednesday, July 19, is dedicated to supporting the firefighters battling the blazes, particularly those affecting the Cap Ferret peninsula.

The scale of the fires has led to the evacuation of over 200,000 people across mainland France, forcing them to leave their homes and, in some cases, their pets, uncertain if they will ever see them again. The critical situation has deeply affected the public, including RTL hosts Jean-Jean and Courbet. Courbet, who owns a home in Cap Ferret, was compelled to evacuate and felt a strong urge to contribute rather than remain passive.

Initially, Courbet used his social media platforms to provide regular updates on the situation and relay information from local authorities. However, his commitment extended further as he began volunteering to assist the firefighters struggling to contain the flames. On Tuesday, July 28, the M6 host shared a message on X (formerly Twitter) highlighting the need for "motor pumps and water tanks to supply and intervene quickly on flare-ups and fire starts" from volunteers working alongside the firefighters on the peninsula.

Beyond his social media engagement and previous testimony on RTL, Courbet decided to propose a special live broadcast from Gironde on RTL. The program, scheduled for Wednesday, July 28, between 9:15 AM and 10:00 AM, aims to rally support for the firefighters and victims. Jonathan Curiel, general director of M6 radio stations, told Le Parisien that Courbet was "very affected and wanted to help the victims, the firefighters, but also the animals, a cause to which he is very sensitive." Organizing such a last-minute broadcast required significant logistical efforts, including transporting "microphones, cables, and technical equipment necessary to produce a correct broadcast under quite daunting conditions."

Éric Jean-Jean is also participating, taking the airwaves on Wednesday evening from 7:15 PM to 8:00 PM. Although not physically present in the affected area, Jean-Jean, known for hosting "Le Grand Studio" and "Stop ou encore," was born in the region and feels a personal connection to the crisis.
