Hotel fire in Dominican Republic kills Italian tourist

A significant fire erupted at the Viva Dominicus Beach by Wyndham hotel in Bayahíbe, Dominican Republic, on June 19, 2026, claiming the life of an Italian tourist and necessitating a large-scale evacuation. The blaze quickly engulfed parts of the four-star resort, which features structures with thatched roofs and cane, contributing to the rapid spread of flames and a thick plume of black smoke visible across the popular Caribbean tourist destination. Authorities confirmed the death of Francesca Valentino, a 46-year-old tourist from Caserta, Italy, who succumbed to injuries sustained in the fire while receiving emergency medical attention. Her tragic death has sent shockwaves through the tourism sector and consular offices. In response to the escalating fire, hotel security and internal brigades initiated evacuation protocols, moving hundreds of guests and employees to a safe distance on the adjacent beach. To mitigate risks from smoke inhalation and falling debris, authorities also ordered the evacuation of nearby hotels. The 911 Emergency System coordinated a substantial response, deploying 11 fire units from Bayahíbe and surrounding areas, later reinforced by four additional units. Firefighters established a containment perimeter to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby wooded areas and other hotel blocks. The logistical operation involved multiple agencies, including the National Water and Sewerage Institute for water supply, health units, the National Police, and the Ministry of Public Works. Resources included water tanker trucks, platform cranes, patrol cars, ambulances, and a backhoe, with drones used for aerial surveillance. The Viva Dominicus hotel had recently completed extensive renovations to its common areas and dining facilities.
