Housewife arrested for assaulting domestic help in Gurugram's Camellias

Police arrested a 52-year-old housewife in Gurugram on Monday for allegedly assaulting and confining her 22-year-old domestic worker. The incident occurred at the upscale DLF Camellias high-rise residence.

The accused is a housewife, and her husband is the proprietor of a chain of liquor outlets.

The arrest followed the viral circulation of a 90-second video, reportedly filmed by a neighbor, showing the employer assaulting the house help. Police registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

In the video, the employer is seen assaulting the house help repeatedly, pulling her by hair, choking her, and shoving her inside the kitchen which was visible through a glass window.

Investigators identified the accused as Ruchira Sachdeva. She reportedly told police the assault on the Nepal national occurred on July 24 over a work dispute. The house help allegedly returned to Nepal on July 27.

The accused has been identified as Ruchira Sachdeva (aged 52), a resident of Camellias Apartments, Sector 42, Gurugram.

Police are also investigating claims that the victim was not allowed to use a phone or leave the house. A document signed by the victim, requesting no legal action, has been presented to investigators, who will determine if it was signed willingly or under duress. Police have the victim's details and plan to contact her to record her statement.

It was a work-related dispute over which the woman assaulted the 22-year-old. Following the incident, the house help returned to Nepal on July 27.
