Houston Teacher Reveals Seniors' Basic Literacy Struggles

Darius Williams, a teacher at Wheatley High School in Houston, Texas, became visibly emotional during an Instagram live session, sharing his deep concern over the academic challenges faced by some of his graduating students. He reported that several seniors, aged 17 and 18, are struggling with basic reading and writing abilities that should have been mastered much earlier in their education.

Williams recounted that the issue became apparent on his second day of classes when he conducted a simple reading exercise. He presented students with a nearly complete sentence and asked them to fill in the missing words. However, he observed that many of the young adults had significant difficulty identifying the correct words to complete the sentences accurately.

Attempting to guide the students, Williams provided examples and sample sentences. Despite these efforts, he noted that some students were still unable to correctly complete four of the proposed sentences. This situation has led Williams to express profound worry about the students' future academic and professional paths, particularly as they prepare to enter higher education, the workforce, and adult life.
