Houthi rebels declare naval blockade against Saudi Arabia, threatening Red Sea passage

Yemen's Houthi rebels, supported by Iran, announced a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia on Sunday, declaring it effective immediately. Yahya Saree, a Houthi spokesperson, stated the blockade was declared on "criminal" Saudi Arabia under the "eye for an eye" principle.

The rebels claim this action is retaliation for Saudi airstrikes on Sanaa airport, which is under Houthi control. The Houthi movement criticized the Saudi-led coalition's airstrikes on the airport and declared an end to the ceasefire that had been in place since 2022.

This declaration of a naval blockade raises significant concerns for international maritime traffic. The Bab el-Mandeb Strait, at the entrance to the Red Sea, is a vital chokepoint for global energy supplies. If passage through this strait becomes difficult, it could disrupt Saudi Arabia's oil exports from its Yanbu port, which rely on the Red Sea route to reach the Arabian Sea. Furthermore, the route through the Red Sea and Suez Canal to the Mediterranean Sea could also be affected.

The conflict between the Houthis and the Saudi-led coalition has been ongoing, with previous ceasefires offering temporary respite.
