Houthis amplify aid to Hezbollah despite Yemen crisis, expert says

The Houthis' continued promotion of aid to Hezbollah, even amid Yemen's severe humanitarian crisis, stems from the group's self-perception as the "vanguard of Muslim causes," according to Bridget Toomey, a research analyst at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies.

Toomey spoke to The Jerusalem Post after Yemen's Interior Ministry released footage of a warehouse allegedly containing resources destined for Lebanon. She noted that the Houthis have been known to send funds and supplies to Hezbollah since at least 2019.

The people in Yemen are in serious need of assistance themselves. Some of the people featured in these videos appear to be Yemeni, while others seem to be Hezbollah affiliates saying, 'Look at the generosity of the Houthis.' For many Yemenis, that's a slap in the face.

These fundraising efforts, also directed towards Gaza and Hamas, have sparked significant outrage in Yemen, where 80% of the population lives below the poverty line. Toomey described the Houthi propaganda, which features both Yemenis and Hezbollah affiliates, as a "slap in the face" to many Yemenis in dire need of assistance.

Furthermore, Toomey explained that the Houthis, like other groups controlling territory, use resource distribution as a tool for population control. By acting as intermediaries for aid organizations, they leverage the flow of supplies to coerce the population, ensuring dependence and compliance. "When aid is distributed, it's often done in a way that serves their interests, and at times they even profit from it," she stated.
