How many Italian retirees live in Tunisia?

About 3,000 Italian retirees lived in Tunisia at the end of 2024, according to the latest Istat data on Italians residing abroad. Of those retirees, 91.5% were born in Italy, indicating that the community is made up largely of people from the peninsula.

Istat counted 347,000 Italian retirees living outside Italy worldwide. Europe hosted 54% of them, while 39.6% lived in the Americas. Oceania accounted for 3.6%, Africa for 1.8% and Asia for 1.1%.

Around 72% of Italian retirees abroad were born in Italy, or nearly 250,000 people. Tunisia was among the countries outside Europe with a notable Italian retiree population, alongside Croatia, which also had about 3,000, and Romania, with nearly 2,500.

The statistics also estimated that 6.604 million Italians lived abroad on Dec. 31, 2025, an increase of 183,000 in one year. Growth slowed, however, rising 2.8% in 2025 compared with 4.6% in 2024. The Tunisia figure refers exclusively to Italian retirees and not to all Italians living in the country.
