How many passengers use the Los Alcarrizos metro each day?

The Santo Domingo Metro’s Line 2C has more than tripled its daily ridership since opening, reaching about 13,000 passengers on the route to Los Alcarrizos.

Jhael Isa Tavárez, executive director of the Trust for the Development of the Mass Transit System, said ridership initially stood at around 4,000 passengers a day. Speaking on the program LA Agenda Semanal, he said officials expect the figure to rise above 20,000.

Demand has grown by approximately 15% each month since the extension opened in February 2026, Isa Tavárez said. The Line 2C route connects kilometer 9 of the Duarte Highway with the municipality of Los Alcarrizos.

The metro extension works with the Los Alcarrizos cable car, a 4.19-kilometer line operating since March 2023. The cable car carries passengers from within the municipality to the exit, where they connect with the Metro’s 2C station. The cable car began charging 20 pesos on August 17 after operating free of charge when the metro extension opened.

Isa Tavárez said the growth should be viewed as part of a wider plan to integrate the Metro, cable cars and monorails. He said the country does not have enough resources to build all its transport infrastructure through one rail system, so different modes are being combined to reach the communities that need them.
