How politicians and media in Israel fuel settler violence in the West Bank

Israeli media outlets are accused of fueling violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank by uncritically broadcasting politicians' inflammatory rhetoric, according to the newspaper Haaretz. This pattern is particularly evident in the coverage following a deadly confrontation in the Palestinian village of Tell, which resulted in the deaths of four Palestinians and two Israelis.

Following the incident on July 24, 2026, Israeli media largely framed the event as a "terrorist attack" with minimal critical examination of the settlers' aggressive actions. Meanwhile, politicians like Ben-Gvir and Smotrich called for the destruction of Palestinian villages, echoing tactics seen in Gaza. This narrative was followed by a wave of settler violence across the West Bank, including arson attacks on mosques and the destruction of homes and vehicles, injuring at least eight Palestinians. Despite this, Israeli authorities arrested nearly seventy Palestinians while no settlers faced detention.

Yair Dvir of the Israeli human rights organization B'tselem stated, "The Israeli mainstream media repeatedly repeats the frame of 'Palestinian terror.' The reality on the ground, of ethnic cleansing by settlers and the army, is left out of the picture for the Israeli viewer."

The confrontation began when approximately 20 armed settlers from the illegal outpost Havat Gilad descended on Tell. A clash ensued with villagers, leading to the deaths of four Palestinians, including Benyahu Mellet, a settler who was killed by a villager after attacking him with his rifle. Another Israeli, Yuval Ezra, later died from his injuries. The entire incident reportedly occurred under the observation of Israeli soldiers.

Critics argue that this media framing creates a distorted perception, making it seem as though settlers were ambushed by "bloodthirsty Palestinian terrorists" rather than being the aggressors. This narrative obscures the reality of the situation on the ground, where settler violence and military actions contribute to ethnic cleansing.
