How the new Chinese hybrid SUV drives, and what it costs, with powerful mechanics and 900 km of range

The arrival of new Chinese brands is rapidly changing the vehicle market, and the Dongfeng Mage is part of that shift. Rather than competing only on price, the compact SUV focuses on equipment, technology and the balance between what it offers and what it costs.

The Mage arrives from China with a hybrid powertrain and a single equipment level. Its design may be its least striking feature, but the vehicle follows current trends with a large, streamlined body and generous dimensions. It measures 4.65 meters long, 1.905 meters wide and 1.63 meters high, with a 2.775-meter wheelbase.

Several details give the exterior a distinctive look. The front features a sharply sculpted hood, a large V-shaped grille combining different materials, slim LED headlights linked by a light strip, and lower air intakes with chrome edging. The test vehicle had two-tone white and black paint, concealed door handles, 19-inch wheels, black roof bars, a defined waistline, a large rear spoiler and body creases that create changing patterns of light and shadow.

The illuminated word “Aeolus” appears at the front, reflecting Dongfeng’s Chinese name for its SUV line. Inside, the Mage follows a familiar formula among Chinese vehicles: carefully finished surfaces, abundant technology and numerous screens. It has a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel and a 13.2-inch central display that controls both multimedia functions and most vehicle settings, with few physical controls.

The cabin also includes a gamepad-style multifunction steering wheel, cut flat at the bottom, and a short Crystal Paddle gear selector with transparent sections.
