How to apply for free CAC registration under FG’s 250,000 MSME programme

Nigeria's Federal Government has launched an initiative to provide free business registration for 250,000 Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). This program, approved by President Bola Tinubu, aims to integrate more entrepreneurs into the formal economy by removing the cost barrier of business registration.

The initiative is being executed through the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) in collaboration with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). Eligible nano, micro, and small businesses will receive free Business Name registration, with the government covering all statutory fees. The program was announced during the 8th National MSME Awards held in Abuja.

Beyond the crucial registration process, the program offers additional support to beneficiaries. This includes technical training and business development services designed to improve the sustainability and growth prospects of these enterprises. The government views this as a key step in fostering a more robust and inclusive formal economy.

To apply, business owners must visit the official SMEDAN portal (portal.smedan.gov.ng), create an account, and complete the MSME registration form. Applicants should indicate they do not have an existing CAC registration number. Businesses already registered with SMEDAN but lacking CAC registration may automatically qualify. Successful applicants will be contacted with further instructions for their free CAC Business Name registration. This effort follows a Memorandum of Understanding between CAC and SMEDAN to formalize a significant number of small businesses nationwide.
