As Mexico's electric vehicle market expands, drivers are increasingly seeking convenient ways to recharge their cars, with home charging stations emerging as a popular solution. These domestic charging points, referred to as "electrolineras domésticas," offer users greater independence from public charging infrastructure and can lead to long-term economic benefits.

According to the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), electric and plug-in hybrid car chargers can be installed in homes, businesses, or public spaces. They connect to the electrical grid, ensuring safety and availability. The primary advantage is the ability to charge a vehicle overnight or whenever it's not in use, reducing range anxiety and potentially lowering overall costs.

Several types of home chargers are available, varying in charging speed and power requirements. Basic chargers utilize a standard power outlet, taking between 12 to 14 hours for a full charge or 8 to 12 hours for 80% charge. Level 2 chargers, more common for frequent use, offer faster charging, reaching 100% in 3 to 4 hours or 80% in 2 to 3 hours.

For high-demand use or long-distance travel, high-power chargers are recommended, though their charging times can be significantly longer, ranging from 20 to 30 hours for a full charge. Before installation, consumers should assess their budget, charging needs, and desired speed. Chargers are typically mounted on walls or in garages for easy access and a stable connection.

Professional installation is crucial, and it's advisable to hire a certified electrician. Additionally, CFE recommends contracting a separate electricity meter for the charger, isolated from the home's main consumption. This process is free and can be requested from CFE, ensuring efficient and safe operation of the home charging system.
