HRT remembers presenter whose sentence is remembered by all of Croatia: Here's what he told defenders

On Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day, Croatian Television (HRT) paid tribute to its legendary presenter, Branimir Dopuđa. During years when news from the front lines was awaited with anxiety, one of his recurring phrases offered a moment of solace and national unity.

Dopuđa's sign-off, "Dear viewers, I wish you a pleasant evening, and a special greeting to Croatian defenders, wherever they may be," carried immense emotional weight. It assured those fighting on the front lines that they were not forgotten and provided much-needed hope to their families.

This powerful message became permanently etched in the nation's collective memory as a symbol of resistance and gratitude. HRT honored his legacy on a day celebrating Croatia's victory, reflecting the profound impact his words had during a critical period in the country's history.

Branimir Dopuđa, a respected journalist and editor who passed away in July 2023 at age 76, began his career in 1974. He held numerous key editorial positions and is best remembered by audiences as the lead anchor and editor of the main evening news from 1988 to 1996, as well as for the popular show "Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow." His professionalism and calm demeanor instilled confidence in viewers during times of great uncertainty. He also served in various editorial roles, including as the first editor of HRT's satellite program "Slika Hrvatske" (Image of Croatia), aimed at Croats abroad. In recognition of his significant contributions to Croatian journalism, he received HRT's lifetime achievement award, the "Ivan Šibl" award, in 1994. Though no longer with us, his voice and memorable words remain a significant part of Croatian television history.
