Hsiao Huang-chi slips in a dark joke during filming, leaving Pai Ping-ping baffled and the studio in stitches

Hsiao Huang-chi turned a routine question about his powerful singing voice into a joke that left the studio audience laughing. Asked by host Pai Ping-ping what he had in his stomach to produce such strong breath support, he replied that it contained “fatty oil,” which he said forced out the power needed to sing.

He continued by claiming that he eats braised pork rice before singing to warm up his voice. When the hosts listened seriously, Hsiao added that he had driven himself to the Linkou studio. A car needs fuel to move, he said, and people need oil to lubricate their throats before they can sing. Pai did not immediately understand the dark joke, while Yang Fan reacted with an exaggerated collapse in disbelief that Hsiao had driven himself.

The appearance came during an episode themed “Songs, Sunshine and Rain, Thinking of Home.” Hsiao performed “The Black Dog Brother on the Mountain” and also sang the popular hit “Grandma’s Words.” The program said he has won five Golden Melody Awards for Best Taiwanese Male Singer and four for Best Taiwanese Album.

In the ninth round, contestants faced three consecutive matchups after drawing a top challenger, meaning they could not know in advance who they would meet the following week. Wu Shih-chi, ranked third, drew reigning champion Chou Po-lin, described on the show as a formidable opponent. The draw left Wu saying she had suffered a week of insomnia.
