Hualien DPP Branch Egged; Police Pursue Suspect

The Hualien County branch of Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) was targeted in an act of vandalism when an unidentified individual threw eggs at its headquarters. The incident occurred around 6 p.m. on a recent evening. Police were alerted and are currently investigating the case, reviewing surveillance footage and vehicle information to identify and apprehend the perpetrator.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing a man dressed entirely in black riding a black electric scooter. He allegedly rode against traffic on the sidewalk, stopped in front of the DPP Hualien office, and threw objects at the main entrance before fleeing the scene against traffic. Upon closer inspection, it was discovered that the objects thrown were eggs, which shattered against the building's door, leaving shells on the ground. The party office had already closed for the day, and staff were notified by neighbors before reporting the incident to the police.

This incident follows a recent attack on Katsuaki Yaita, CEO of the Indo-Pacific Strategy Think Tank, who was injured in an assault by a Chinese national. The DPP Hualien Chairman, Chen Ching-feng, expressed regret over the violent act, emphasizing the importance of rational communication and dialogue in a democratic society. He stated that while the motive is under investigation by the police, whether it is related to elections, political stances, or personal issues, the party advocates for rational discourse.

Chen urged the public to engage in rational communication, asserting that the DPP has always been inclusive of different opinions and voices. He stressed that the cornerstone of a democratic and legal society lies in rational communication, condemning the act of violence.
