Huge quake hits west Colombia, killing at least 73 people and collapsing buildings

A devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake rocked western Colombia on Monday, claiming the lives of at least 73 people and leaving numerous others injured. The seismic event, with its epicenter in the remote community of San Jose Del Palmar, caused buildings to collapse and forced widespread evacuations, with tremors felt as far as the capital, Bogotá. Hard-hit regions include Risaralda, where the city of Pereira is located, and Valle del Cauca, home to Cali, Colombia's third-largest city. Tragically, children were among the victims in Valle del Cauca. Newly inaugurated President Abelardo de la Espriella has personally taken command of the government's emergency response efforts, assuring citizens that the state is actively engaged. This earthquake presents the first major crisis for de la Espriella's administration. International support has been swift, with Israel, Mexico, Brazil, Ecuador, El Salvador, and the United States offering assistance. The UN has also stated its readiness to help as needed, underscoring a global response to the tragedy.
