Hundreds Missing, Including Americans, After Nepal Flash Floods

Flash floods and landslides in northern Nepal have resulted in at least 18 confirmed deaths and left over 380 people missing, according to authorities. The disaster struck valleys in the country's northern border areas, devastating villages and infrastructure.

Among the missing are at least three U.S. nationals, identified from lists compiled by tour companies and Nepal's Tourism Board. In total, 291 foreign nationals are reported missing, including individuals from the UK, India, Malaysia, South Africa, South Korea, Australia, and the Netherlands. The nationalities of 111 other missing persons are yet to be confirmed.

The torrents of water surged through mountain passes, tearing down bridges, dams, and buildings. Videos shared on social media depict the destructive power of the floods. The Nepal Electricity Authority reported damage to six major hydropower and transmission facilities, with the full extent of the destruction still being assessed.

Nepal's President Ramachandra Paudel expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life and property, urging intensified rescue and relief operations. However, rescue efforts are severely hampered by the challenging mountainous terrain, with helicopters unable to land in key affected areas like Syapru Besi and Timure. The flash floods were reportedly triggered by an earthquake-induced landslide that dammed the Bhote Koshi River, leading to a sudden surge of water.
