Hungarian representative criticizes government's stance on mayors

A Hungarian representative has strongly criticized the government's approach to local mayors, accusing officials of condescending attitudes and potentially reducing their salaries and allowances. The representative argued that such actions undermine the dignity and self-esteem of mayors, many of whom have served their communities for decades.

He emphasized the significant contributions of mayors, particularly in smaller municipalities, noting that they often use their personal vehicles and time to manage town affairs and assist residents. The representative drew a parallel to his own experience, having worked with many mayors in his previous roles in disaster management and government administration, stressing the natural importance of mutual assistance and cooperation in public service.

The representative recalled past government rural development programs like the Hungarian Village Program and the TOP program, which he credited with fostering development in rural areas. He stated that if the current government's promised, but not yet existing, Szent István Plan proves beneficial for development, it should be acknowledged.

He urged the minister responsible for local governments to win over the mayors rather than lecture them. "Public administration and regional development are serious fields requiring experience, knowledge gained over years, heart, and love. And humanity," he stated. He suggested the minister's critical remarks might stem from "revolutionary fervor" and advised the government to act with magnanimity and dignity after their election victory, rather than generating new conflicts with local leaders.
