Hungary's National Day to Feature Party Celebrations Alongside State Events

Hungary's national day, August 20, is set to feature a unique blend of state-organized family events and Tisza party celebrations, raising questions about the separation of political and public functions. The government plans a family day on the Lower-Great Meadow of Margaret Island, while Tisza, led by Péter Magyar, is holding its own party event nearby.

Concerns have been voiced by Fidesz politician Tibor Navracsics, who questioned the potential overlap between the state and party events. He sarcastically noted the expectation of no overlap in programs or funding, implying a risk of state resources being used for political gain. Magyar has stated the events will be held in entirely separate locations.

Adding to the unusual observances, the country's new president, András Baka, elected by the governing majority, will be sworn in on August 20. This transition follows the amendment of the constitution, which ended Tamás Sulyok's presidential term, a move initiated by Magyar with the explicit aim of installing a new president by this date.
