Hungary's Parliament Convenes for Two-Day Session to Elect President, Vote on Key Bills

Hungary's parliament is set to hold a two-day extraordinary session starting Tuesday, focusing on the election of the country's next president and crucial legislative decisions. The election process mandates a two-thirds majority of parliament members for the first round of voting. If no candidate secures this threshold, a second round will proceed, where the candidate with the most valid votes will be elected.

Currently, András Baka is the sole candidate for president, nominated by the Tisza Party. The Fidesz-KDNP coalition is not participating in the nomination process, citing the "illegitimate" removal of Tamás Sulyok. Mi Hazánk has nominated Máté Tóth, but their party's six parliamentary representatives may not be sufficient to secure his nomination, making Baka's election in the first round likely.

Following the presidential election, the parliament will address several significant legislative proposals. These include measures on healthcare data management, public education, public finance rules, the 2026 budget, law enforcement responsibilities, and the agricultural chamber. The parliament will also decide on the duration of the resignation of Chief Prosecutor Dr. Gábor Bálint Nagy.

Additionally, parliamentary immunity cases for three representatives, Lőrinc Mihály Varga, Péter Takács, and László Toroczkai, will be decided. Toroczkai faces two separate immunity cases. Suspending parliamentary immunity requires a two-thirds majority vote from the present representatives.
