Hungary’s State Audit Office calls for overhaul of TAO sports funding system

Hungary’s State Audit Office is calling for a fundamental review of the TAO sports funding system, arguing that its scale now requires stricter public oversight.

The report draws four linked conclusions. TAO has created value by significantly expanding infrastructure, youth development and opportunities for sports participation. At the same time, the system distributed 367.5 billion forints over three years, leaving many sports organizations structurally dependent on it.

The audit office says the original incentive model has partly turned into a permanent operating-finance system. Because the money is public funds, it argues that TAO can no longer be managed through the same loose structure used for conventional corporate sponsorship.

The body is not proposing that TAO be abolished. Instead, the report lays the professional groundwork for rethinking public procurement, oversight and the system’s long-term financing model. It also warns that a sudden end to the program could create serious sustainability risks because of the dependence that has developed around it.
