Hungary's U20 Handball Team Crowned European Champions in Romania

Hungary's U20 men's handball team has achieved a historic victory, becoming European champions for the first time in their history by defeating Sweden in Romania. The final match was a nail-biting affair that ultimately required overtime to decide the winner.

The second half mirrored the first, with the Hungarian team starting strong and taking a 17-16 lead. However, Sweden quickly responded, turning the game into a back-and-forth battle where neither team could establish a significant advantage. The pattern saw Sweden leading by one goal, followed by Hungary equalizing, a cycle that repeated for much of the game.

As the final ten minutes approached, Sweden managed to build a two-goal lead, but Hungary's responses were only enough to narrow the deficit to one. The critical question became whether Sótonyi's team had the stamina to mount another comeback. They did, successfully equalizing at 28-28 in the final minute, forcing the game into overtime.

In the extra period, Hungary found an overwhelming surge of energy, ultimately winning the match 34-32. Péter Gazsó was instrumental, scoring nine goals by the 23-23 mark and finishing with a total of 14. Ádám Balogh's saves in overtime were also crucial. Gazsó was named the Most Valuable Player of the final by the European Handball Federation (EHF).

Reflecting on the tournament, head coach László Sótonyi expressed pride in his team's performance. "We tried to take it game by game, but I felt that reaching the quarterfinals was less of a burden for the guys," he said. "Once we achieved our initial goal, the team started to fight even harder. The players were not satisfied with reaching the semifinals, I am proud of them."
