Hungary's women's volleyball team sets ambitious World Championship goal with young squad

The Hungarian women's national volleyball team is embracing a bold strategy centered on youth development, aiming to build a strong foundation for future success, including qualification for the World Championship. Coach Jakub Mrozek acknowledged that while the team's recent youthfulness is partly due to circumstances, including player injuries, it also reflects a deliberate decision to invest in the next generation.

Mrozek highlighted the team's exceptionally young average age, noting the inclusion of three players born in 2009 and two in 2008. He emphasized the invaluable experience these young athletes will gain by competing in major tournaments like the European Championship. "We are the only team in the European Championship with three players born in 2009 and two born in 2008," Mrozek stated, underscoring the team's unique developmental trajectory.

Despite the team's inexperience, Mrozek expressed confidence in the players' potential and stressed the importance of internal motivation over external pressure. The ultimate goal of reaching the World Championship looms large, but the immediate focus is on approaching each match with a clear mindset, self-belief, and strong team cohesion. Németh Anett, the team's most experienced player preparing for her fourth European Championship, echoed this sentiment.

"We strive to make the most of every situation in each match," Németh said. "We will be playing against excellent teams and world stars. We want to enjoy every moment of the European Championship, but we are not going to Istanbul just for a holiday. We are aware of what is at stake."

The team's preparation included a bronze medal in the European League and friendly matches against Spain and Belgium, though they did not secure victories in the latter. The path to the 2027 World Championship is challenging, with qualification likely depending on performance in the European Championship and subsequent world rankings, especially considering that teams ranked below Hungary also have potentially easier group stage draws.
