Hurricane Lala Threatens Hawaii; State of Emergency Declared

Hawaii is preparing for the potential impact of Tropical Storm Lala, which is strengthening and forecast to make landfall on the Big Island as a hurricane on Saturday. The storm is bringing dangerous conditions, including high winds, heavy rainfall, and rough surf, to the US Pacific island state.

Governor Josh Green has declared a state of emergency, a move intended to ensure that the state and its counties have adequate resources to manage the storm. This includes provisions for clearing debris, securing infrastructure, and undertaking other necessary preparatory actions.

A hurricane warning is in effect for Hawaii County, which comprises the Big Island. Additionally, tropical storm warnings are posted for the islands of Maui, Molokai, and Kahoolawe. Other islands in the archipelago are under tropical storm watches.

Forecasters predict significant rainfall, potentially reaching up to 12 inches (30 centimeters) across Maui and the Big Island, with some areas on the Big Island possibly receiving up to 25 inches. Storm surge of 1-3 feet is also expected, and hazardous conditions may continue into Sunday.

Officials are urging residents to complete their preparations promptly, stay informed about the storm's progression, and avoid hazardous areas. Recommendations include clearing gutters and drains, securing outdoor items, and trimming potentially dangerous tree limbs. Hawaii has not experienced a major hurricane since 1992, when Hurricane Iniki caused significant damage and fatalities.
