Husband arrested, accused of killing wife in car fire after falsely blaming phone explosion

In Córdoba, Argentina, a man accused of killing his wife in a car fire has been arrested. Gerardo Luis Gasparutti initially claimed the blaze that severely burned his wife, María Lucila Pagani, was caused by her cell phone exploding while charging.

Pagani died three days after the June 14 incident, succumbing to her injuries. However, firefighters immediately doubted Gasparutti's account. Subsequent investigations by judicial authorities, including numerous expert analyses, found no trace of a mobile phone, charger, or cables in the wreckage of the Renault Sandero.

Instead, investigators detected the smell and traces of combustible fuel. Based on this evidence, prosecutor Liliana Copello ordered Gasparutti's arrest and charged him with qualified homicide by relationship. The couple, both academics, were on their way to dinner to celebrate their anniversary when the fire erupted on a rural road near Villa Allende.
