Husband's affair at home leads to divorce ruling

A court has granted a divorce to a woman in Hsinchu after her husband brought his mistress home for sexual encounters. The wife, Zhang, retaliated by damaging her husband's belongings, including cutting his pants and bedsheets, and severing the power cord of the refrigerator.

Zhang's husband, Chen, claimed his wife exhibited hysterical behavior, such as pouring water from upstairs and destroying property. He also accused her of constant verbal abuse and humiliation, stating her demands and commands created significant mental distress. Chen argued that the marriage had reached a point of irreparable breakdown, making cohabitation impossible.

Zhang, however, stated that her husband was frequently unfaithful and only covered basic household expenses, with the rest of his income going into the stock market. She claimed that her family supported the majority of their living costs. The court noted that the couple had previously signed a separation agreement in August 2020, indicating a loss of willingness to maintain the marriage.

The judge concluded that the couple's relationship had deteriorated to the point of being "ice cold," with no foundation for mutual tolerance. The husband's actions of bringing a mistress home and preventing his wife from using the refrigerator, coupled with the wife's destructive acts, solidified the court's decision. The court found no possibility of harmonious coexistence and granted the divorce, stating the marriage existed only in name.
