‘I can never repay your love’: President tells Thakurgaon residents

President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told residents of Thakurgaon that he could never repay the love and trust they had shown him throughout his political career. Speaking at a civic reception at Thakurgaon Government Boys’ High School, he said, “I can never repay the love you have given me. It is a debt that can never be repaid.”

The reception marked Fakhrul’s first visit to his home district since taking office. He described Thakurgaon as peaceful and urged political parties to preserve that environment. Parties should promote their ideologies without entering into conflict, he said, warning that “we do not want any more bloodshed.”

Fakhrul called political tolerance one of democracy’s most important elements. He urged politicians to use dialogue and discussion rather than violence or confrontation, and said he wanted to see genuine consensus-based politics in Bangladesh. He also called for stronger democratic institutions and harmony among people of different faiths, saying, “We do not want to see divisions among Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists and Christians.”

The president said Thakurgaon had long remained relatively underdeveloped, with many residents living in poverty and often unable to express their demands effectively. He said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had made several campaign pledges in the district, including the creation of a public university. “The land for the university has been acquired,” Fakhrul said.

He also referred to demands to make Bhulli and Ruhia separate upazilas. On the possible reopening of Thakurgaon airport, he said industrialization would be needed to make it economically viable. Other plans include improvements to schools, colleges and madrasas, a sports village, a modern information complex, a regional National University office and a regional cooperative institute. Fakhrul also urged young people to oppose drugs and work toward making Thakurgaon a drug-free district.
