“Everything will be shown on the pitch.” Roberto Moreno used that message to outline his approach after taking charge as interim coach of South Korea’s national football team.

Moreno, 49, said on his personal website that he felt honored and responsible to lead the team. He said he had followed and respected Korean football for years, and now regarded contributing to its development as his duty. He did not promise results, but pledged diligent work, honesty and respect.

The Korea Football Association approved the appointment of Moreno and five members of his coaching staff on July 1. Moreno became the first head coach of the South Korean national team to be selected through an open recruitment process.

I feel honored and responsible to take charge of the Korean national team. I have watched and respected Korean football for many years, and now my duty is to devote myself to the development of Korean football.

He will initially lead the team in six A matches scheduled from September through November. Depending on the results, his tenure could extend to the 2027 Asian Cup, which opens in Saudi Arabia next January. Korea Football Association technical development committee chairman Hyun Young-min also explained the reasoning behind Moreno’s appointment on July 4.
