I’ll reverse public facilities named after Tinubu, others if elected — Sowore

Omoyele Sowore, a prominent human rights activist and presidential candidate for the African Action Congress, has declared his intention to reverse the naming of highways, public institutions, and national assets after President Bola Tinubu and other officials if he wins the presidency in 2027.

Sowore's vow came in response to the Federal Government's recent decision to rename the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway in honor of President Tinubu. The Minister of Works, David Umahi, announced the renaming, stating it recognized Tinubu's long-standing vision for the project, which he reportedly conceived about 27 years ago as governor of Lagos State. The minister also revealed Tinubu's approval for a 400-kilometer extension of the highway and reconstruction of other major road projects.

The naming of highways, national institutions, and public assets after officials of the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu regime that impoverished Nigeria and those who enabled its decline will be reversed as a matter of urgency under a #Sowore2027 administration.

In a statement shared on his Facebook page, Sowore criticized the current administration, stating that naming assets after the "Tinubu regime that impoverished Nigeria" would be reversed "as a matter of urgency" under a "#Sowore2027 administration." This is not the first time Sowore has proposed significant policy reversals; he has previously pledged to abolish the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board and replace the National Youth Service Corps with a voluntary National Job Corps focused on employment and skills development.

That (coastal) highway is named President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Coastal Highway. By the powers conferred on me as Minister of Works, in consultation with my Permanent Secretary, the Minister of State, directors and staff of the ministry, we decided to name it after him because of his dream for it. He had that dream about 27 years back as governor of Lagos State. It is one thing to dream and another thing to have the grace of God to actualise that dream.
