‘I’m not thinking right, right now’: Video shows Justin Bone days before killings

RCMP dash cam footage, shown in court during the murder trial of Justin Bone, offers a glimpse into the accused's state of mind days before he was arrested in connection with the 2022 beating deaths of two men in Edmonton's Chinatown. The video, recorded in May 2022, shows Bone in the back of a police cruiser as officers drive him to Edmonton from a family friend's home.

There’s not one day at a time when you’re on the street.

During the 49-minute drive, conversations between Bone and the officer behind the wheel reveal his anxieties. When the officer suggests taking things "one day at a time," Bone responds, "There’s not one day at a time when you’re on the street." He expresses distress over being taken from a place he was supposed to be, stating, "Well, you just did, you just did by taking me from where I’m supposed to be." Officers appeared uncertain about where to take him, eventually agreeing on Edmonton despite his release conditions ordering him to stay away from the city.

Bone pleaded with the officers, saying, "I’m not getting breached, I don’t want to do anything wrong. I don’t want to be doing this, you guys are making me do this." The officer's response, "We’re trying to get you on the right path," was met with an angry retort from Bone: "No! This is the wrong path!" Before being dropped off in Edmonton's Jasper Place neighborhood, Bone stated, "I’m not thinking right right now. I’ll figure it out officer, trust me in that. You brought me here, you had to, you wanted to, I will find my way. If not, then I’ll f–k’n probably end up back with you guys."

Ban Phuc Hoang, 61, and Hung Trang, 64, were killed three days after this footage was recorded. Bone's trial for the second-degree murder charges is scheduled to resume on August 10.
