I Will Not Tolerate Illegal Detention of Suspects, Abuse of Office, IGP Warns CPs

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Olatunji Disu has issued a stern warning to Commissioners of Police nationwide, vowing zero tolerance for illegal detention of suspects, abuse of office, and other forms of misconduct under his leadership. Disu stressed that upholding professionalism, respecting human rights, and ensuring strict adherence to due process are paramount for effective policing.

Effective policing starts with effective leadership. As commissioners of police and strategic commanders, you are custodians of public confidence in your commands.

Speaking at the Inspector-General of Police Meeting with Police Strategic Managers in Abuja, Disu highlighted that disciplined leadership, accountability, and public confidence are the cornerstones of policing. He charged police commanders with the responsibility of setting the right standards and maintaining the trust of the communities they serve. "Leadership is not measured by the authority you hold, but by the standards you set, the confidence you inspire and the results you deliver," Disu stated.

The IGP also directed the commissioners to ensure their commands are operationally ready and to hold officers to high standards of professionalism, discipline, and respect for citizens' rights. He explicitly warned that "Corruption, extortion, abuse of authority, unlawful detention and other unethical conduct undermine the efforts of the Nigeria Police Force to deliver effective service."

Furthermore, Disu emphasized the critical role of community policing, urging commissioners to deepen engagement with traditional leaders, religious figures, youth and women groups, and community associations. He described these partnerships as essential for crime prevention, stating, "Community policing is not a side programme; it is the foundation on which effective policing rests."

Earlier in the event, Disu decorated 13 newly promoted Assistant Inspectors-General and 17 newly promoted Commissioners of Police. He urged them to lead with integrity and fairness, maintaining a zero-tolerance policy for misconduct and corruption.
