ICE Arrests Over 1,300 Migrants in Virginia and Maryland Operation

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) conducted a large-scale operation in Virginia and Maryland, arresting 1,328 migrants between August 1 and August 14. The initiative, named "Operation Secure Community - Washington, D.C.," focused on detaining individuals within the suburbs of the nation's capital and other areas in both states.

While the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported that nearly 400 of those arrested had prior criminal convictions or charges in the U.S., a striking majority, over 900 individuals, did not. This detail suggests that most of the detainees were apprehended without facing criminal accusations on U.S. soil, a point highlighted by immigration lawyer Carlos Jurado.

The number leaves more than 900 arrested outside of that group. Therefore, the majority of those detained were not individuals with convictions or criminal charges in U.S. territory.

Jurado noted a perceived increase in violence and aggression during recent enforcement actions, despite a general decrease in the frequency of large-scale raids. He represents José Mejía Hernández, who alleges excessive force by ICE agents during his arrest, waking up in a hospital with facial injuries despite facing no criminal charges.

The DHS has defended the operation, framing it as part of the Biden administration's immigration enforcement strategy. However, the high number of arrests of individuals without criminal records has drawn scrutiny. This operation follows a similar initiative in Atlanta in July, which resulted in over 1,200 arrests, underscoring a broader trend in immigration enforcement actions across the region.
