ICE detainee dies in CNMI prison

An immigration detainee held at the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) Department of Corrections died early Sunday morning. Authorities identified the detainee as Lian Yong Wei. Prison staff discovered him unresponsive during routine checks at the Saipan facility. Emergency medical procedures were immediately initiated, and Wei was transported to the Commonwealth Health Center, where he was pronounced dead. The Department of Corrections stated that protected health information, including details about Wei's medical condition, would not be released. The Department of Public Safety and other relevant investigative bodies have been informed, as has U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The exact circumstances surrounding Lian Yong Wei's death are currently under investigation. According to the Department of Corrections, Wei was initially taken into custody on multiple charges, including disturbing the peace, assault, assault and battery, aggravated assault and battery, assault with a dangerous weapon, and an immigration violation.
