ICE Reports Highest Monthly Detentions Under Trump, Nearing 50,000 in July

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) apprehended nearly 50,000 migrants in July, marking the highest monthly total of detentions during President Donald Trump's second term. This represents a significant 15% increase compared to the 43,021 arrests recorded in June, according to an analysis by the University of California, Berkeley.

The surge in arrests is attributed to the administration's intensified efforts to expedite deportations nationwide. Data from UC Berkeley's Deportation Data Project indicates that ICE has detained 368,135 foreign nationals so far in fiscal year 2026. However, this cumulative figure still falls short of the White House's ambitious target of one million deportations annually.

Arrests are expected to continue at a similar pace. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed the detention of over 1,300 undocumented migrants in Maryland and Virginia during an operation conducted between August 1 and August 14. The agency emphasized that these apprehensions occurred despite sanctuary policies in place in counties within both states.

The heightened enforcement actions come amid criticism of the administration regarding the fatal outcomes of some procedures, including the deaths of two U.S. citizens in Minneapolis in January. These aggressive immigration policies, a cornerstone of the administration's platform, appear to be impacting public support ahead of the midterm elections. A recent poll indicates that 50% of Americans view the mass deportation campaign as excessive and aggressive, with less than 90 days remaining until the legislative elections.
