Icheon City's Municipal Crematorium Project Moves Forward with Urban Management Plan Approval

Icheon City residents who have long endured the inconvenience of traveling to other regions for funeral services will soon see their long-awaited municipal crematorium become a reality. The city announced on May 24 that it has finalized the urban management plan decision for the crematorium's construction. This crucial step legally establishes the foundation for the development project.

The facility will be built on a 134,233㎡ site in Dancheon-ri, Hobeop-myeon, with an estimated budget of 35 billion won. It will feature six crematoriums, a parking lot, a park, and other amenities. To address environmental concerns, the crematorium will incorporate advanced, eco-friendly complete combustion technology and air pollution prevention systems.

Previous attempts to build the facility since 2011 faced setbacks due to resident disputes. However, a breakthrough occurred last year when 77% of residents in Dancheon 1-ri agreed to the plan, and neighboring villages also expressed support. This led to residents directly submitting a proposal, overcoming previous hurdles. The chosen site, surrounded by mountains, offers excellent natural shielding and convenient transportation access.

The city plans to move beyond the traditional somber image of crematoriums by integrating eco-friendly elements and artistic architectural design. The goal is to create a landmark public building that harmonizes with the natural landscape, serving not just as a funeral facility but also as a complex relaxation space connected to a tourism cluster.

A city official stated, "With the completion of the urban management plan decision, we will swiftly proceed with subsequent steps like detailed design and groundbreaking." The official added, "We will do our best to improve funeral welfare for citizens who have faced significant costs and disruptions to their funeral schedules due to traveling for cremation services."
